Pedro Pascal Recalls Relaxing Experience Filming Oberyn Martell’s Death Scene in Game of Thrones

Pedro Pascal, known for his role as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones, revealed that his on-screen death was unexpectedly calming for him. The graphic scene involved Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson’s character, The Mountain, gouging out Oberyn’s eyes and crushing his skull. Despite the brutality of the scene, Pascal found solace in the fact that the fake blood used to create the pools of blood helped to cool him down in the intense heat of the shoot.

During an appearance on “Hot Ones,” Pascal shared his experience while filming the scene. He talked about how he was able to remain calm despite the graphic depiction of his character’s death. “He got on top of me and stuck his thumbs in my eyes. They put tubes through his body, into his forearms and thumbs, pumping out cold blood. And [he was] so gentle. The kindest guy. I didn’t feel any pressure at all, and he was well aware of it. I didn’t even feel his weight on me when he was on top of me.”

Once the brutal murder was over, Pascal had to remain still for a wide shot of his character’s corpse, and the crew put chunks of meat on his face to make it look more realistic. The cooling effect of the meat, along with the relief of finishing the intense fight scene, put Pascal into such a deep state of relaxation that he fell asleep on set. “I went into the deepest sleep I’ve ever had. Now I realize that because I don’t sleep very well, I need to be laid out with chunks of meat, cold-faced gelatinous meat, and pools of blood, and I might finally get a good f***ing night’s sleep,” Pascal joked.

Currently, Pascal is starring in two popular television series, HBO Max’s The Last of Us and Disney+’s The Mandalorian. Even though he enjoys acting, he has revealed that he’s always had issues with seeing, especially when it comes to wearing Din’s suit in The Mandalorian. Jon Favreau has also praised his incredible portrayal of Joel in The Last of Us, and The Last of Us’ Troy Baker had great things to say about working with Pascal during the casting process.

Despite the uncomfortable nature of Oberyn Martell’s death scene, Pedro Pascal found comfort in the cooling effects of the fake blood used on set. His performance in Game of Thrones, as well as his work in other TV series, continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
