Ashley Johnson Recounts Tearful Moment Offered Role in The Last of Us Series
The Last of Us series has been met with critical acclaim, showcasing performances that captivate audiences in every episode. For actress Ashley Johnson, who portrays Ellie in the Naughty Dog games, being a part of the series has been an emotional journey. During a recent press conference, Johnson shared the moment when series creator Neil Druckmann and showrunner Craig Mazin proposed a role for her as Anna, Ellie’s mother in the adaptation.
“I broke to tears,” Johnson admits, “when he [Druckmann] texted me and said, ‘Hey Craig [Mazin] and I have been talking and…would you like to play Ellie’s mother?'” Johnson continued to explain that there were multiple layers to her portrayal of Anna and her metaphorical role in bringing Ellie into the world and fighting to keep her alive.
The opportunity for Johnson to delve deeper into the lore and history of the character through the series was a unique experience for her. Compared to the Naughty Dog games, where only a few references to the character were made, The Last of Us series allows for a deeper understanding of Anna’s story and the origin of Ellie’s immunity.
Although Johnson’s role in the series is confined to one episode of the first season, fans are already speculating about the future of the show. Clues have already been dropped about a second season, and Johnson has expressed her happiness in being involved in translating the story from game to screen. “It’s crazy to me: voice actors usually don’t get involved in putting something on the screen. I am very grateful and very happy, and I had a lot of fun filming it,” said Johnson.
Fans eagerly await the confirmation of a second season and the possibility of more to come as The Last of Us continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
