Universitario de Deportes Secures Victory Over Binational in Close Match
The match between Universitario de Deportes and Binacional was full of excitement from the beginning to the end, as both teams fielded their best players to secure a victory and three crucial points in the 2023 Opening Tournament of League 1. In the end, it was the ‘merengues’ who emerged victorious with an intense goal by Alex Valera in the dying minutes of the game.
Horacio Calcaterra took charge of a corner kick for the ‘merengues’ in added time of the second half. He looked up and sent the ball into the rival area, where Alex Valera replaced Emanuel Herrera at the 58th minute. Despite being under pressure from a Binacional player, Valera showed great skill by anticipating the ball and powering it towards the goal of Diego Enríquez, who was unable to save the ball from slipping through the net.
This victory broke the Universitario de Deportes’ streak of ten consecutive matches without a win outside Lima in League 1, and placed them at sixth position in the position table of the 2023 Apertura Tournament with nine units.
The previous encounter of Universitario de Deportes saw them triumph over Cienciano with a score of 2-0 for the 2023 Copa Sudamericana. This win qualified them to enter the group stage of the continental tournament which allowed them to pocket a whopping $900,000. It was definitely a sporting and economic success for the ‘creams’.
In contrast, Binacional had a different and not so fortunate experience. They lost against César Vallejo (3-1) in their Copa Sudamericana fixture and bowed out of the international competition without making it to the next round. To add insult to injury, the president of the Juliaqueño club, Juan Carlos Aquino, insulted the technical director of his team in a recent incident.
This match was full of surprises, close calls and intense moments, making it an entertaining fixture to watch from start to finish.
