UAE Calls for Practicality at COP28 Amid World’s “Bad Way”
Abu Dhabi Minister calls for ‘practical’ United Nations Conference at COP28
Abu Dhabi’s Minister of Energy and Industry and Chief Executive of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, has called for practicality to be a driving force behind the annual United Nation’s conference which will be held this year in Dubai.
Talking at the Global Energy Forum which was organized by the Atlantic Council, he indicated that “the world is going astray” in its attempts to conform to the Paris Agreements. He pointed out that the key to achieving the goal of keeping temperatures below 1.5°C is to reduce green house gas emissions in the order of 43% by 2030.
The minister also said that economic insecurity, political tensions and energy insecurity had to be addressed else the process of change will not be successful.
In order to achieve tangible solutions, Dr. Al Jaber said that all parties involved at COP28 must be prepared for radical changes. He also added that the Global South countries which have been affected the most by climate change must also be confronted with this issue.
Referring to the ‘loss and damage’ mechanism created at COP27, Dr. Al Jaber laid out the importance of rebuilding together the most vulnerable countries. He urged that the ‘loss and damage’ fund should be ‘fully operationalized’ with the help of the private sector.
