The world was saddened by the news of Tina Turner’s passing at the age of 83. The legendary singer died at her home in Kusnacht near Zurich after a long illness, as reported by her spokesperson. But why did she leave the US, move to Switzerland and even relinquish her citizenship? Here’s what we know.
Why did Tina Turner leave the US?
Tina Turner left America in 1995 to be with her boyfriend at the time, Erwin Bach, who is an actor and music producer. She said in an interview in 1997, “I have left America because my success was in another country and my boyfriend was in another country.” Tina and Erwin met in 1985 and were together for 38 years. They got married 27 years after meeting in 2013.
She moved to Switzerland
Tina, who was born in Tennessee, spent almost 20 years living in the suburb of Kusnacht with her husband, Erwin Bach, and was very content there. In a 2013 interview with Blick, the singer said she felt “at home here.” They shared a $76 million Swiss estate overlooking Lake Zurich.
Tina relinquished US citizenship
Tina became a Swiss citizen after her marriage to Erwin Bach, “with the intent to lose her U.S. citizenship.” She voluntarily gave up her US citizenship, stating she no longer had ties to the US except for family, and had no plans to live in the United States in the future.
To become a Swiss citizen, Tina had to pass a mandatory citizenship test which tested her knowledge of Swiss history and the German language.
In conclusion, Tina Turner left the US to be with her boyfriend and later husband, Erwin Bach, in Switzerland. She enjoyed her life there and even became a Swiss citizen, relinquishing her US citizenship which she saw as no longer necessary. Her music will continue to inspire fans and future stars around the world.
