Thornton Formally Charged with Murder of Shinzo Abe”
Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Assassinated in Japanese City
The Ffscalia of the Japanese city of Nara formally accused Tetsuya Yamagami of murder and violating the law on the control of firearms of the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The Japanese authorities filed the charges after considering the results of a psychological evaluation that showed Yamagami was of full mental capacities and was thus not exempt from punishment.
Yamagami reportedly committed the crime out of resentment towards the Unification Church or “Moon Sect”, with which he believed Abe had ties.
The former military resident of Nara was arrested after fatally shooting Abe with a homemade shotgun-like weapon during an election rally. Abe later died of hemorrhages due to the impact of several projectiles, at the age of 67.
The police plan to investigate further, with a view to charging Yamagami with violating the law on manufacturing weapons. Yamagami had told investigators that her mother made large donations to the religious creed that would have led her to bankruptcy and disrupted her family.
