HBO’s The Last of Us has proven to be a successful adaptation of the original game, but the challenge now is how to tackle the emotionally complicated sequel, The Last of Us: Part 2. The game is more than twice as long as its predecessor, making it difficult to fit everything into one more TV season. Therefore, the storyline is expected to be split over two seasons. Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin will need to make some minor adjustments, as the sequel relies more on gameplay than the direct adaptation of the first.
To bring the two protagonists, Ellie and Abby, closer together, Abby will be introduced earlier in the series. Abby could infiltrate the Jackson community and become friends with Joel, creating a pre-existing link between the two. Flashbacks will also be used to flesh out Abby’s backstory and conclude with the revelation that Joel killed her father. This would create a similar twist to the game’s ending.
The second season will begin with Joel and Tommy being attacked by a group of assailants, with Abby and Owen coming to their rescue. After integrating into Jackson’s community, Joel and Tommy take Abby and Owen on patrol. Ellie and Dina also head out on patrol, and they all take refuge to avoid a blizzard.
As Ellie, Dina, Joel, Tommy, Abby, and Owen explore Seattle, they become embroiled in a world of mysteries and revenge. With the series split over two seasons, there is plenty of time to delve into the complex and emotional storyline. While these predictions may not be the same as Druckmann and Mazin’s plans, they provide an insight into how the story may develop. The Last of Us has captured the hearts of many, and the expectations for the HBO adaptation are high.
