Bumble, a dating app where women make the first move, is using new technologies to identify and combat offensive behavior and online harassment. Machine learning is one of the tools being used to eliminate cyberbullying, which is a common practice that affects the dignity of women and men. The platform is trained through algorithms to identify negative patterns and make predictions, automatically prioritizing the most serious security reports and shortening the response time for them. Additionally, the platform uses artificial intelligence to detect content in over 100 languages, including harassment, incitement to hate, and inappropriate content.

Bumble also has a Private Detector Function, which uses an algorithm to determine if a photo contains a lewd image and gives the user the option to see it or not. A global study conducted by Bumble and Ipsos in Mexico and Colombia revealed that cyberstalking, online sexual harassment, offensive insults, and revenge porn are the most common negative practices. The study also found that cyberbullying is perceived as a serious problem that affects women more than men.

According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics in Colombia, women are the biggest victims of online harassment, with over 300,000 cases per year. Bumble was the first dating app to explicitly moderate cyberbullying and has advocated for policies that promote online responsibility in several countries. The effects of cyberbullying not only encompass mental health but also increase concern for safety and change online and offline behavior. In Mexico, 5 out of 10 people surveyed chose to stop using social networks or other apps, and in Colombia, it was 4 out of 10.

Payton Iheme, Global Vice President of Policy at Bumble, emphasized the importance of addressing cyberbullying and promoting a safer online environment. Efforts to address cyberbullying include developing and enforcing regulations, implementing effective reporting systems, and fostering a supportive and inclusive online culture. Bumble is committed to creating a safe and respectful online environment for all users.
