Honduras could shift its diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China, reducing Taiwan’s official diplomatic allies to 13, according to President Xiomara Castro. Taiwan has tried to increase its annual aid package to Honduras to $100m, but the country’s foreign minister, Eduardo Enrique Reina, has complained that it has received no response. Meanwhile, China has welcomed Honduras’ declaration, with the Chinese Foreign Ministry stating that it is willing to form friendly ties. Experts suggest that China is using bigger aid packages and better access to the Chinese market in order to encourage countries to rethink their allegiances.
