
Explosives and shots found at Surinam Court Trigger Emergency Meeting
Early Saturday morning, Surinam authorities planned an emergency meeting following the attack on the courthouse on January 14, 2023. Two court security guards present during the attack at 10:30 p.m. (02:30 GMT) were unharmed.
According to security camera video, two men on a motorcycle stopped outside the courthouse. One of them got off the motorcycle and dropped a bag with the explosives and opened fire with a machine gun, breaking several windows and then fleeing the scene.Hand grenade paired with a detonator was also found.
The government offered a press conference with President Ronnie Brunswijk to give more details about the incident.
The authorities such as Police and Forensic Investigation team continue to investigate the event and to determine if the attack has any connection to the appeal case of former Suriname president Desi Bouterse. Bouterse was sentenced with 20 years imprisonment for executing 15 opponents in 1982 during his military government.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. President Chandrikapersad Santokhi will return to the country next Monday from an engagement in India.
