Jon Rahm, the Spanish professional golfer and current world number one, has been forced to withdraw from the Players Championship due to a positive Covid-19 test result. Rahm, who was in 32nd place after the first day, was due to compete on Friday with American Scottie Scheffler and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, his main challengers in the world rankings.
Scheffler, who is currently ranked second in the world, will be hoping to take advantage of this opportunity to reclaim the top spot. According to the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), he could do so by finishing in the top five at the TPC Sawgrass course.
Unfortunately, Rahm’s withdrawal represents a significant setback for the golfer, who has enjoyed a successful start to the season, winning three PGA trophies and reclaiming his position at the top of the rankings.
Rahm had also set a record by starting the Players Championship with a streak of 25 consecutive tournaments breaking the cut. The last time he had missed out on the deciding weekend was at the 2021 Fortinet Championship.
The Players Championship is regarded as one of the most prestigious events on the golfing calendar, outside of the Grand Slams. Despite his enforced withdrawal, Rahm will undoubtedly be hoping to return to action before long and continue his impressive form on the course.
