“I really wanted to cover this song because it’s one of my favorites from Taylor’s first album,” said Sophie Allison, also known as Soccer Mommy. “I listened to that record so much when I was a kid and I think it had a lot of influence on me then.”
Allison has been gaining recognition for her emotive, punk-tinged rendition of “I’m Only Me When I’m With You.” The cover will be featured on her upcoming five-song covers EP, Karaoke Night, set to be released on September 22 via Loma Vista.
Karaoke Night will also showcase Soccer Mommy’s interpretations of tracks by Slowdive, R.E.M., and Pavement. In addition, her recently-released cover of Sheryl Crow’s “Soak Up The Sun” will be included.
This is not the first time Allison has been influenced by another artist’s work. In an interview with The New York Times last year, she spoke about how Crow’s songs have impacted her own music. “She has a knack for saying something hard, but making it feel like she’s ready to acknowledge it and be cool with this hard acceptance,” Allison said.
Soccer Mommy’s latest LP, Sometimes, Forever, was released last summer and has been well-received by both fans and critics alike. She is currently on tour, supporting the album. Recently, she concluded a U.S. trek with Maggie Rogers and will soon be opening several dates for The National in the U.K. and Europe in September. Later this year, Soccer Mommy will be performing at three festivals in South America: Primavera Sound São Paulo, Primavera Sound Asunción, and Primavera Sound Bogotá.
