Six people killed, including two minors, in armed attack in Veracruz, Mexico
At least six people, including two minors, were killed on Sunday afternoon during an armed attack in Veracruz, eastern Mexico. Police reports revealed that the attack occurred on the Veracruz-Xalapa highway, in the area known as Las Bajadas of the tourist and cargo port.
Five people in a pickup truck and one man in a taxi were shot to death, while another person in the taxi was wounded. Agents from the Mexican Navy, the Mexican Army, the National Guard and the State Police arrived to protect the area and begin a search operation for the attackers.
Veracruz has been witnessing a wave of violence since December which included the deaths of the treasurer of the municipality of Tezonapa, Rafael Delgado on December 30 and 31 and simultaneous attacks on bars in January that killed eight people.
According to official figures, in 2022, Veracruz registered a total of 854 intentional homicides, of which 513 were with a firearm and 105 with a knife. In December, Veracruz registered 6,720 crimes in total with 165 intentional and culpable homicides.
The Mexican government has pledged to restore peace and security to the eastern state.
