Senior officials in Ukraine resign amid allegations of purchase of supplies with inflated prices for the army
Several senior officials in Ukraine announced their resignations from their positions on Tuesday due to allegations that supplies for the army were purchased at inflated prices. Among these officials were the Deputy Defense Minister Viacheslav Shapovalov, Deputy Head of Presidential Administration Kirilo Timoshenko and Deputy Attorney General Oleksii Simonenko.
Timoshenko had also been highlighted in a controversy for using an SUV provided by the US car company General Motors to rescue citizens from combat zones and for humanitarian missions. He was further accused of exceeding his duties in different regions and of participating in political activities.
President Volodimir Zelensky, in light of the ongoing scandals, decided to dismiss the Deputy Minister along with other personnel changes in ministries, regions and law enforcement systems. Timoshenko was in fact replaced with Oleksii Kuleba, the current Head of Kyiv Regional Military District Administration. Additionally, the heads of the military and civil administrations of further regions such as Sumy, Dnipro, Zaporizhia and Kherson may also resign in the coming hours.
