Radio Cáritas Universidad Católica 680 AM, a well-known radio station in Paraguay, has recently been the victim of threats, according to reports this Tuesday (24.01.2023). Miguel Ángel Ortiz, the general director of Radio Cáritas, told EFE agency that an unknown person called the station several times from January 21 to 22 with an intimidating demand to withdraw or delete a certain publication.

The incident has led to the reinforcement of the station’s internal and external security. With 86 years of service, Radio Cáritas remains committed to broadcasting the message of peace and goodwill to the nation, despite the threats to the freedom of expression and press.

“This threat constitutes a serious violation of freedom of expression and press in the country,” an official statement from Radio Cáritas read, adding that it is another addition to the unfortunate events in regards to journalistic work.

According to data from human rights organizations, 20 journalists in Paraguay have been killed since 1991 with Santiago Leguizamón Zaván being the first victim. In December 2022, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IDH Court) ruled that the State of Paraguay was responsible for Zaván’s death.
