Paris Saint-Germain’s European dreams were shattered on Wednesday, March 8th after their 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. Leading the way was Cameroonian international, Maxim Choupo-Moting, who scored the first goal of the game. PSG had to win by two goals to overcome the defeat of the first leg (1-0) to avoid exiting the tournament once again in eighth place, just like last year against Real Madrid. PSG, already eliminated from the Coupe de France by Marseille, would only have a 12th Ligue 1 title to conquer. However, that would not be enough to satisfy the Qatari owners, who are obsessed with the Champions League since their arrival in 2011.
Kylian Mbappé led the charge for PSG with several attempts, one of which looked promising but was saved by Matthijs de Ligt in front of the line. Gianluigi Donnarumma kept PSG in the game with solid performances throughout but ultimately could not stop Bayern from scoring. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, a former Parisian, scored the crucial goal in the 61st minute after inheriting the ball from Leon Goretzka, who crossed it in. At the end of the game, Serge Gnabry drove the point home by scoring the second goal in the 89th minute.
Despite PSG’s star-studded lineup, including Kylian MbappĂ© and Lionel Messi, PSG found themselves struggling to break through Bayern’s defense. It was PSG’s Spanish central defender Sergio Ramos who created the best free-kick opportunities but, unfortunately, it was not enough.
With this defeat, PSG’s European dreams have been dashed once again, and they will have to regroup and focus on their remaining fixtures in Ligue 1. Only time will tell whether PSG will be able to win the Champions League soon and finally satisfy their owners’ ambitions.
