Prosecutor of Peru Archives Complaint Against Fujimori

Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office Files Complaint Against Keiko Fujimori and Her Father

The Prosecutor’s Office of Peru has filed a complaint against the leader of the Fuerza Popular party, Keiko Fujimori, and her father, former President Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), for the alleged commission of the crimes of criminal organization, falsification of documents and induction to vote in a certain direction to the detriment of the Peruvian State.

Local media reported that the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office against organized crime considered it inappropriate to “formalize and continue with the preparatory investigation”. Keiko and her father, in addition to representatives of her party, businessmen, and public officials were included in this decision, made by prosecutor Erasmo Benavides.

Peruvian attorney general, Patricia Benavides stated that “each prosecutor carries out its functions as it corresponds and the instance correspondent”. Elio Riera, one of the defenders of former President Fujimori, expressed his satisfaction towards the prosecutor’s pronouncement. He added that they will process their request for malicious denunciation.

The investigation began as a result of a complaint filed in 2021 by lawyer and former judge Malzon Urbina, accusing Keiko Fujimori of allegedly bringing $1. 25 million into the country from Switzerland to finance her 2021 electoral campaign.

The prosecutor concluded that in their investigations “it has not been possible to verify simple suspicion of evidence of a solid organizational structure” warranting a criminal network. The current resolution is awaiting appeals.

The case is separate from the investigation being conducted by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor against Keiko for alleged irregular financing of her 2011 and 20216 campaigns. The prosecutor in charge has requested 30 years and 10 months in prison against Keiko for the commission of the crimes of criminal organization, money laundering and procedural fraud.
