On January 23, 2024, Esteban González Pons, the Deputy Secretary of Institutional Affairs of the PP, made a statement in which he compared the current Constitutional Court (TC) to a “cancer of the Rule of Law.” However, he has now taken back his words, acknowledging that the comparison was not appropriate.

In a statement, Pons expressed his regret for making the comparison and specifically apologized to those who have been affected by cancer. He emphasized that the PP knows how to recognize and admit when they have made a mistake.

Pons also mentioned that the PP may consider refraining from presenting appeals before the current Constitutional Court due to its perceived shortcomings. He expressed his party’s commitment to exploring all political, social, and judicial avenues to prevent what they believe to be illegal and unjust measures. Additionally, he stated that the PP will take the Amnesty Law to the TC for review once it is definitively approved.

Furthermore, Pons criticized the distribution of members in the TC, particularly the involvement of individuals associated with Pedro Sánchez’s government and the State Attorney General of former President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. He expressed concern about the compromised image and independence of the TC.

Pons also condemned the manipulation of the TC by the PSOE and emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity of democratic institutions. He declared that the PP will not cooperate with any actions that discredit institutional integrity.

Finally, Pons confirmed that the PP will seek clarification from the TC regarding the constitutionality of certain matters, particularly in response to the opinion of the lawyers of the Congressional Justice Commission.
