Peruvian Foreign Minister Visits US Amid Ongoing Crisis
Peruvian Foreign Minister Mari Gervasi has arrived in the US capital as part of an official visit amid criticism towards her government’s management in the midst of an ongoing crisis in the country.
Gervasi will have meetings with the Undersecretary of the Department of State, Wendy Sherman, and the adviser to President Joe Biden for Latin America, Juan González, according to the Peruvian Foreign Ministry’s statement. The minister will also visit Congress, where she will meet with influential Democratic Senator Bob Menéndez.
This comes in the wake of almost twenty Democratic Congressmen and various human rights organizations demanding President Biden restrict security assistance to Peru until the violent repression of the protests ends and measures are taken to investigate rights-related crimes. Similarly, the Organization of American States (OAS) has expressed concern about the excessive use of force against Peruvian protestors which has resulted in 65 deaths since December 7.
President Dina Boluarte proposed to move the electoral process forward in order to achieve a peaceful solution in the country during her virtual address to the OAS.
