Turkey’s presidential campaign officially began on Friday, March 10, and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan faces strong opposition from Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who has been nominated by the “Table of Six”, a coalition of the six main opposition parties. Kilicdaroglu, who is often referred to as “the antithesis of Erdogan,” has pledged “the beginning of a total change” and has become one of the main faces of opposition to the president. Despite being criticized for his lack of charisma, Kilicdaroglu’s calmness is seen as an advantage in contrast to Erdogan’s authoritarian and bellicose image. The Kurdish vote is also considered to be pivotal for the election, with Kilicdaroglu’s nomination expected to attract Kurdish voters. Erdogan remains solid with 40% of the vote, but the result could be very close, according to the latest polls. The opposition’s common objective is to end Erdogan’s rule and return to a parliamentary system. Erdogan, on the other hand, will try to mobilize the electorate by playing with the divisions of the opposition to discredit it.
