Nicaraguan doctor, Anely Pérez Molina, was arrested at her home in the south of Managua and imprisoned by the Nicaraguan authorities. The reason for her arrest has not been declared yet. Pérez Molina is a member of the opposition Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy and the Nicaraguan Medical Unit. The medical groups and human rights defenders have criticized her detention. The Nicaragua Human Rights Collective Nunca Más expressed in a statement that they joined the complaints for her arbitrary detention and for receiving threats for her activism in networks. There are currently more than 35 political prisoners in Nicaragua, and the collective demanded their freedom.
The Nicaraguan Exile Medical Association has also condemned her arbitrary detention and demanded her immediate release. In a statement, they said that Pérez Molina was imprisoned for being a promoter and defender of human rights, freedom, justice, and democracy in Nicaragua. They expressed concern for her physical and psychological integrity and urged the Nicaraguan authorities to respect her rights. The medical union and health workers who are not related to the government have been at risk in Nicaragua since the social outbreak of 2018. Harassment, threats, persecution, dismissals, exile, and imprisonment continue to be realities that put a large population of healthcare professionals at risk.
The National Police has not referred to the complaint or the arrest. Nicaragua has been going through a political and social crisis since April 2018, which worsened after the controversial November 2021 elections in which Ortega was re-elected for a fifth term, fourth in a row, and second along with his wife, Rosario Murillo, as vice president, with its main contenders in prison. Pérez Molina’s arrest is the latest in a series of detentions in the country under a generalized pattern of repression.
