One Dead, Dozens Injured in Stampede at Iraq Stadium
At Least 1 Dead, 60 Injured in Stampede at Basra Stadium in Iraq
At least 1 person died and 60 others were injured in a stampede at the Yezá al-Najla stadium in Basra, Iraq on Thursday (19.1.2023), according to the official Iraqi news agency, INA. Several of the injured are in serious condition.
The incident occurred when huge amounts of people gathered to attend a match between Iraq and Oman, in the finals of the Gulf Cup. As the crowd of tens of thousands attempted to get closer to the stadium entrances, a stampede broke out leading to the tragic casualties.
The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohamed Shia al Sudani, traveled to Basra after the incident, to hold a meeting with several members of the National Cabinet, including the governor of Basra. The Interior Ministry issued a statement urging people to abide by the rules and instructions of the authorities, and not to go to the stadium unless they have tickets to watch the game.
This is the second incident of tragedy related to the Gulf Cup (involving eight Arab teams) after a traffic accident last Monday caused the death of seven fans and injured 30 more.
