Nissan and Renault Negotiate to Strengthen Alliance
CEOs of both companies, Makoto Uchida and Luca de Meo, have held a meeting on Thursday to discuss the status of the talks between Nissan and Renault. According to sources, both companies have been in negotiations since October to “strengthen cooperation and the future of the alliance”.
It is expected that Nissan and Renault will make a joint announcement around February 6 to unveil the new alliance structure and new joint projects. Renault is willing to reduce its stake in Nissan to 15%, thus equating both companies. They are also tackling Nissan’s stake in Ampere, Renault’s new EV entity.
Nissan and Renault forged their alliance in 1999 when the French company invested some 4,000 million dollars in the Japanese company. Since then, former president of both firms Carlos Ghosn has been one of the main architects of the alliance. Since his departure in 2018 the two companies have been discussing new cooperation formulas without having reached an agreement.
