El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, had an unexpected meeting with Lionel Messi and the Inter Miami team during his visit to the country. Bukele showed up at the hotel where the players were staying, causing a 15-minute delay in the protocol of the match between the MLS club and the host team.
Bukele, who is known for being active on social media, took a picture with Messi and other members of the MLS team and shared the images on his social networks. This generated mixed comments and reactions among football fans, but the most notable repercussion was the delay in the start of the match due to the unexpected visit moments before the game.
President Bukele is known for his direct and confrontational style, and his active participation in the sporting arena once again placed him in the media spotlight, even though the match did not meet the fans’ expectations.
The presence of Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi, caused a big celebration in El Salvador. However, the excitement throughout the country did not match the spectacle on the pitch at the Estadio Cuscatlan in front of some 30,000 fans, as the match ended goalless. Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suarez started for Tata Martino’s side.
During half time, the fans saw Jorge ‘Magico’ Gonzalez, the leading exponent of Salvadoran football, take to the field to greet the international stars present on the pitch. He was greeted with applause by the fans who packed the stadium to witness Messi’s first visit to their country.
