NASA and Axiom Space have revealed a prototype spacesuit designed for the Artemis program, which will enable humans to return to the Moon’s surface after more than 50 years. The Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) lunar spacesuit boasts major design improvements over its Apollo-era counterpart and features an impressive range of motion. The suit’s dark grey aesthetic with orange accents was designed with the help of costume designer Esther Marquis. However, during a mission, the classic NASA white look would be applied to the suit for better sunlight reflection and heat resistance. The EMU will be provided by commercial partners like Axiom Space, unlike the suits used on the International Space Station which are based on 40-year-old technology. The Artemis III mission, tentatively set for launch in 2025, will involve astronauts wearing the AxEMU spacesuit returning to the lunar surface.
