Mikaela Shiffrin falls short of equaling Lindsey Vonn’s record
Mikaela Shiffrin’s pursuit for Lindsey Vonn’s historic World Cup wins record will have to wait at least another day. The American ski racer finished sixth in a Giant Slalom event, ending her five race winning streak in the course.
She remains one win away from Vonn’s 82 victory mark, who retired in 2019 with numerous injuries after briefly challenging the overall record of 86 wins held by Ingemar Stenmark.
Valerie Grenier of Canada won the race held in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia with Marta Bassino in second and Petra Vlhova in third.
Shiffrin, who has seven wins this season, has another chance to equal or even surpass Vonn’s record in a second Giant Slalom being held on the same course on Sunday. It will be a momentous occasion for the Alpine skiing world, with leading athletes and fans alike watching to see if Shiffrin will make history.
