Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni highlights importance of EU enlargement to Western Balkans

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni declared the enlargement of the European Union (EU) to the Western Balkans a “priority” during the inauguration of a conference in Trieste today. The two-day conference looks to promote Italy’s role in the region and its process of European integration.

Meloni used a video message to address the importance of the Western Balkans both to Europe and to Italy. She said that the security and growth of all the peoples of the region are fundamental to Italy’s national interest and added that it is necessary to address this issue “in a European context”.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the need to improve EU vision of the region and of providing support to stabilization and full European integration for the Western Balkans, through the fight against corruption, illegal trafficking, and radicalism.

The conference titled “Italy and the Western Balkans: Growth and Integration” was also opened by the Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani and the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Sandra Savino. It will include participation from European Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, the President of the Autonomous Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Massimiliano Fedriga, and the Mayor of Trieste, Roberto Dipiazza.
