McDonald’s has launched a lobbying campaign aimed at changing a major European Union law that would prohibit single-use packaging in restaurants by 2030. The company has funded a report stating the ban could increase plastic production and water consumption, while also reducing food safety guarantee. In France, reusable containers became mandatory in fast food restaurants from 1 January 2021. McDonald’s France switched to the practice but restaurant manager Naomie noted that it had involved significant operational costs. Fast food operators are seeking to combine reusable and single-use packaging, but zero waste organisations believe recycling has shown its limits.
