Israel experienced its eleventh consecutive week of mass protests over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposed judicial reform. More than 260,000 people marched across over 100 locations across the country, in a movement that has seen half a million protesters assemble on one day. Netanyahu’s reform would eliminate the power of the Supreme Court to veto unconstitutional laws and allow the executive to control the appointment of judges, leading to widespread concerns that it would undermine democracy and judicial independence. In this week’s protests, right-wing extremists caused violent unrest and the police arrested about 20 people. Opposition leaders have supported President Isaac Herzog’s alternative reform proposal, which Netanyahu rejected.
