Malaysian Authorities Investigate Reports of H&M Fitting Room Videos For Sale

On the 12th of January, 2023, reports emerged on Twitter of an alleged online sale of videos recorded by hidden cameras in the fitting rooms of the Swedish fashion company H&M’s stores in Southeast Asia. H&M Malaysia’s Twitter account released a statement the day before, stressing that “the safety of our customers is of paramount importance”.

The worrying news was first reported on Twitter by a user claiming to have seen herself in one of the videos recorded in October, 2022. Subsequently, other users reported similar claims with one user recognizing her friend in the video. As per The Star newspaper, the videos were allegedly sold to digital platforms, and included images of both individuals and couples.

In response to these allegations, H&M Malaysia stated that it “has inspected all the stores” in the country and and is ensuring that there are no further security breaches. The Malaysian Police is now conducting an investigation and takes the matter seriously, according to a spokesperson, Noor Dellhan Yahaya. He also promised that they would bring the offender(s) to justice.
