China’s support of Russia in its war with Ukraine has put it in a compromising position as a neutral peace broker, according to Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nausėda. In an interview with Euronews, Nausėda said that China’s apparent goal is to escalate and intensify the conflict, covertly or openly supporting Russia. While Beijing has published a 12-point peace plan for Ukraine, Nausėda said that it is difficult to see China as a mediator between the two nations when it is demonstrating more destructive than constructive actions. The US and its Western allies have warned China about delivering lethal weapons to Russia, while France’s President Emmanuel Macron is expected to raise the issue on his forthcoming visit to the country. Nausėda wants EU governments to improve more restrictive measures in the nuclear sector, while also advocating the delivery of all kinds of weapons to Ukraine, including fighter jets as quickly as possible. He expressed pessimism about a return to the negotiating table in the foreseeable future.
