Palworld developer Pocketpair has released an update for the Xbox and Windows PC versions of the game that fixes some of the issues players are having. The hit survival and crafting game, known as a “Pokémon with weapons”, launched in early access on January 19 on Steam, as well as on Xbox consoles and Windows PC.
However, the Xbox version is trailing behind the Steam version in a number of key aspects. For example, Palworld players can create and join dedicated servers that allow up to 32 players to play in the same world and create guilds together. But on Xbox and Windows PC, Palworld players can’t create or join dedicated servers, meaning online co-op is limited to 2-4 players. Crossplay between Xbox and Steam is also not currently available.
Palworld players on Xbox had assumed they were playing an old version of the game, given some of the missing features, but Pocketpair denied this was the case, insisting that both versions will always be different until cross-play is enabled. According to Pocketpair, the lack of parity between Xbox and Steam is due to the fact that updates have to go through Microsoft’s certification process, while this obstacle does not exist on Steam.
Pocketpair has yet to adequately explain Palworld’s lack of dedicated servers on Xbox and Windows PC. Last week, Pocketpair said: “We would like to have dedicated servers on Xbox, but unfortunately it is not up to us and it is quite difficult to negotiate at the moment,” said a Pocketpair representative. “But… we’re trying!” It’s unclear what Pocketpair means when it says that adding dedicated servers on Xbox is “not up to us,” when other games do have dedicated servers on Xbox. IGN has requested comment but has not yet received a response.
Although Palworld is a resounding success, it is not without controversy. Pocketpair has stated that its staff have received death threats amid accusations of being a “copycat” of Pokémon, and Nintendo was quick to pull a flashy Pokémon mod. The huge launch of Palworld has also caused problems on its servers.
The Palworld patch notes for Xbox include fixes for issues such as the game app going black and not being able to continue, unrecognized commands, incorrect key guide display, and the absence of an exit game button.
Despite the challenges, Palworld continues to be a popular game among players. If you want to know more, you can take a look at our in-progress analysis of Palworld.
