Lebanese Army Fires at Israeli Drone Inside their Territory
Lebanese Army Fires at Unmanned Israeli Aircraft Close to Border
On January 13, 2023, a group of Lebanese soldiers were involved in a patrol near the border between the two neighbouring nations. The incident occurred in the Hula area in the south of the cedar nation and close to the divide.
As the patrol was investigating an alleged “infringement” which occurred in the area, an unmanned Israeli aircraft crossed the Lebanese skies. Subsequently, an officer fired at the drone. However, it still remains unclear whether the device was shot down.
The Shiite group, Hezbollah, which controls the border areas and had fought a brief war with Israel in 2006, occasionally shoots down Israeli drones on Lebanese territory. This altercation, however, involved the Lebanese security forces and is rare.
In October 2020, both Israel and Lebanon entered into a historic agreement to demarcate their maritime borders. The agreement was achieved after US mediation and no major incidents have been reported between the troops since.
The nations, who do not maintain diplomatic relations, are still technically in a state of war.
