Latinx Representation Shines in Miss Universe Semifinals
Miss Universe 2022 Contest: Semifinalists Announced
16 semifinalists of the Miss Universe 2022 contest were announced on January 15th, determined to choose the successor of last year’s winner, Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu. The semifinalists consist of women from various professions and backgrounds, including 15 chosen by score and one chosen by popular vote on the internet.
Haiti’s Mideline Phelizor and Laos’ Payengxa Lor were among the biggest surprises, being the first women from their respective countries to earn a spot in the second round of the competition.
Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo and American presenter Jeannie Mai will be hosts of the grand finale, which takes place in New Orleans after being rescheduled due to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The jury is comprised of Big Freedia, Myrka Dellanos, Ximena Navarrete, Sweta Patel, Wendy Fitzwillilliam and others.
Semifinalists will get the chance to parade in swimsuits and gala dresses and five will progress in the competition. The candidates originate from countries like Haiti, Australia, Laos, South Africa, Portugal, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Curacao, India, and United States. Responsible for their participation are an aeronautical engineer, an activist for equality and safe abortion, a fashion designer, a singer-songwriter and many more who fight for causes like Arecibo observatory’s recovery, mental health and to approve the valorization of all types of bodies.
Tonight’s finale of the Miss Universe contest 2022 might witness a new example of women’s empowerment and will result in the election of the winner of the night.
