Craig Mazin Leaves Door Open To Including Spores In ‘The Last Of Us’ Series

The Last of Us, created for HBO Max, is an adaptation of the acclaimed Naughty Dog video game. There are numerous changes made to the script, one of them being the way humans become infected by the Cordyceps virus. Whereas the game featured two contagion methods – bites and spores, the series has opted to go only with the former. The omission of spores has provoked a lot of fan controversy recently.

Craig Mazin, co-creator of the series, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the possibility of including spores in the series. He claimed the abundance of spores and them being in the air could potentially make it difficult to escape the infection. He further elucidates that in the game, the moment someone leaves a spore zone, they are made to stay a mile away.

However, Mazin stated that spores have not been definitively ruled out and could be utilised in the show in the future. He concluded by stating that they have a plan and spores could come back in the series.

The Last of Us airs on HBO Max with a new episode every Sunday-Monday.
