McLaren F1 made an exciting announcement on Friday, revealing that they have renewed their contract with Lando Norris for several years. This news comes just a day after Ferrari announced their renewal with Charles Leclerc. Norris, a 24-year-old British driver, has yet to secure a victory in F1, despite achieving seven second-place finishes. He had been linked to a potential future with Red Bull, due to his strong relationship with Max Verstappen, but has chosen to stay with McLaren for the time being.
It was widely speculated that Norris would be joining Red Bull, but he has decided to complete another cycle with McLaren, likely until the end of 2027. This decision comes as McLaren showed significant improvement throughout 2023, positioning themselves as the second-best car on the grid by the end of the year. Norris’ contract was set to end in 2025, giving him plenty of time to assess the market, but he has chosen to commit to McLaren.
In response to the contract renewal, Norris expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s a great feeling to continue being a ‘papaya’. I grew up with McLaren and I feel at home here, the team is like a family to me. The journey so far has been exciting. We have had ups and downs, but last season demonstrated our desire to compete at the front of the grid again. The work that Zak, Andrea (Stella) and the entire team have done over the last year has been incredible and I am confident of fighting for victories with McLaren. I’m excited to create more incredible memories and continue to work hard with everyone at MTC for many years to come.”
Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, also expressed his delight at the contract renewal, stating, “I’m delighted that we will continue our relationship with Lando for many years to come. It has been a fantastic journey over the last six years and he has shown fantastic commitment and desire to drive the team forward and return McLaren to the front of the grid. Last season we saw the pivotal role Lando played with the impressive turnaround in results and I’m looking forward to continuing this momentum along with many more podiums.”
Andrea Stella, McLaren F1 Team Principal, added, “I’m pleased to confirm the extension of our partnership with Lando on a multi-year contract beyond 2025. This reflects the commitment and trust we have together, with our shared ambition to win championships again in the future. Lando has grown as a driver and as a person since he joined McLaren in 2017. He impressed last season, playing an important role in our progress throughout the year, taking seven podiums with many fantastic drivers. Together with Oscar (Piastri), our exciting driver pairing will play a key role in our goal of moving towards the front of the grid. They have impressed in their first season together and I look forward to continuing the hard work with them both on this exciting journey.”
