James Gunn arrives at DC to create a unified connected universe.
James Gunn, former director of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, has made a drastic and ambitious decision to (almost) reboot the DC universe entirely. Similar to the Marvel universe, Gunn’s plan is to create a canonical universe that will be respected in all forms of media, including movies, television, video games and animation, and will feature the same actors in all the productions. Most characters, such as Robert Pattinson’s Batman and Gunn’s own Peacemaker project, have already been guaranteed some form of continuity.
There are certain exceptions for Gunn’s DC-wide universe, including this Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn. However, Gunn is looking to replicate the success of the Marvel universe, and take on a role similar to Kevin Feige.
Gunn has mentioned video games being part of the same canon, however there won’t be new projects anytime soon, which includes the Gotham Knights released in 2022 and the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Wonder Woman’s game, being developed by Monolith, is still without further updates. In the end, Gunn is looking to create a unified connected universe similar to Marvel.
