Irven Ávila, known as ‘Cholito’, has been crucial to the success of the Sporting Cristal team in the current continental tournament. His performance has helped consolidate his excellent goal-scoring record, particularly at the local level, where he is currently the top all-time scorer in activity with 159 goals accounting for national tournaments between 1966 and 2022. Depor Data predicts that he will reach the top 3 all-time top scorers in the next two years, only behind Sergio ‘Checho’ Ibarra and Oswaldo ‘Cachito’ Ramírez. Ávila was part of the Peruvian youth team that qualified for the World Cup in 2007, but he did not have the same media exposure as his star teammates. After a bad start, he found his feet at Sport Huancayo, where he signed 43 goals in 109 appearances, making him the second-highest scorer for the club. He later moved to Sporting Cristal, where he played a key role in winning the 2012 championship, contributing 15 goals. With six games guaranteed for the next instance, Ávila could beat the record led by Julinho and Jorge Soto for a long time. He only needs to score five more goals to overtake them. The Copa Libertadores could be the takeoff for him to once again have an opportunity from abroad and tempt a call from Juan Reynoso.
