Interior Minister Refutes Reports of Negotiations to Apprehend Messina Denaro

Italy’s Cosa Nostra Boss Matteo Messina Denaro Arrested After 30 Years On The Run

Italian authorities have announced the capture of Matteo Messina Denaro, the last boss of Sicily’s infamous Cosa Nostra mafia, after 30 years on the run.

The arrest was confirmed in an interview published in the “Corriere della Sera” newspaper by Alberto Piantedosi, the prosecutor in charge of the case.

Piantedosi defended the arrest saying it was a result of long and hard investigative work carried out by specialized units that used traditional investigative methods without embellishment or fantasies. He also highlighted that this effort was a victory for everyone regardless of borders or political colors.

Matteo Messina Denaro was arrested this Monday in Palermo, where he had been undergoing medical treatment for a colon tumor. He is now in the maximum security prison of L’Aquila, subjected to the 41 Bis prison system typically used for gangsters and terrorists.

The mafia boss has been responsable for several attacks in the 1990s, and has been on the run since 1993, making him the most wanted criminal in Italy for decades.
