India Inaugurates World’s Longest River Cruise on the Ganges
Historic Moment: India Launches Its Inaugural Luxury Cruise On The Ganges River
On Friday January 13, 2023, India made history with the launch of its inaugural luxury cruise on the Ganges River. With a journey of 3,200 kilometers, the cruise will traverse 27 river systems as it makes its way from Uttar Praddesh, in northern India to Assam in the northeast. Prime Minister Narendra Modi heralded this “new era of tourism in India” during the virtual launch ceremony.
The three-deck luxury ship, named MV Ganga Vilas, has capacity for 36 passengers. For the maiden voyage, 32 tourists from Switzerland have bought tickets for the entire duration of the journey, which will conclude on March 1.
The cruise will give tourists a chance to explore culture, art, and history of India and Bangladesh as it calls at over 50 tourist spots and World Heritage Sites. Highlights of the trip include visits to Patna, Sahibganj, and Calcutta in India, and Dacca in Bangladesh, before finishing off in Guwahati, India.
As part of the effort to promote river tourism, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the City of Tents, a luxury camping complex on the banks of the Ganges. Guests at the Tent City can look forward to panoramic views of the river, live music performances, yoga classes, and the traditional Hindu ritual or aarti in the evening.
Tickets for the journey reportedly cost up to $400 per night, but luxury seekers may find it an experience of a lifetime.
