On March 27, the Hungarian Parliament will vote on Finland’s entry into NATO. The ruling party, Fidesz, has announced its support for Finland’s accession to the Alliance, ensuring that it will be approved due to their absolute majority. The remaining steps for Finland and Sweden to join NATO are ratification by Hungary and Turkey, the only two countries among the 30 members of the Alliance that have not taken that step yet. While Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has given the green light for Finland to join NATO, Turkey’s attitude towards Sweden’s candidacy is more negative, considering that Sweden has not fulfilled all the conditions imposed upon it. Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary-General of NATO, recently stated that “the most important thing is that both Finland and Sweden quickly become full members of NATO, not that they do so at exactly the same time.” Last year’s invitation for Finland and Sweden to join the Alliance fundamentally strengthened their relationship with NATO and improved their security.
