The Criminal Court number 19 of Barcelona will host the oral trial for the case involving Hugo Mallo on July 11. The trial was originally scheduled to take place at the Ciutat de la Justícia on May 25, 2023. According to reports, the former Celta player is being investigated for an alleged crime of sexual abuse of the Espanyol mascot before a match between the two teams at the Stage Front Stadium on April 24, 2019. The incident is said to have occurred on the field when the teams and mascots were greeting each other.
Hugo Mallo, as captain of Celta, was the first to greet the Espanyol mascot. The alleged victim claims that Mallo’s behavior changed when he reached her, stating that he touched her breasts under the costume and made inappropriate movements. The complaint made by the victim to the Mossos d’Esquadra describes the incident in detail.
The victim’s lawyer and the Prosecutor’s Office are both seeking a 24-month fine for Mallo, to be paid to the State. The case has been ongoing for several years, with the complaint first being admitted for processing in the Court of First Instance and Instruction Number 2 of Cornellà de Llobregat. The worker testified on June 27, 2019, and the player a few days later, on July 10. Mallo’s defense requested that the case be dismissed, but the request was rejected.
On May 31, 2021, the Ninth Section of the Provincial Court of Barcelona determined that the complainant’s account revealed facts that may constitute the crime of sexual abuse. The judge noted that the interaction between Mallo and the mascot lasted longer than other greetings, and that the mascot’s movements suggested that something inappropriate may have occurred.
The trial is set to take place on July 11, and the outcome will determine the consequences for Hugo Mallo.
