Gina Carano sues Disney over Mandalorian firing with Elon Musk’s backing

Actress Gina Carano, known for her role as Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, is taking legal action against Disney for her dismissal from the show. Carano claims she was fired due to expressing her opinions on social media and elsewhere. She also revealed that Elon Musk is funding the lawsuit. In a statement, Carano alleges that her words were twisted to demonize her and that her male co-stars were allowed to speak without harassment, while she was not granted the same freedom of expression.

Carano was fired by Lucasfilm, a Disney-owned company, in 2021 after a series of controversial social media posts. These posts included comparing being a Republican today to being Jewish during the Holocaust, suggesting that the 2020 US presidential election was stolen, and apparently mocking the practice of adding pronouns to social media bios. As the backlash intensified, Disney demanded that Carano meet with representatives of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination (GLAAD) and publicly apologize, which she refused.

In her lawsuit, Carano seeks to be rehired to play Cara Dune without loss of salary or benefits, as well as compensatory damages for back wages she lost as a result of her termination and compensation for future employment, including her promised role in Rangers of the New Republic. Carano played Cara Dune on The Mandalorian for two seasons before being fired. It was reported that her character was supposed to be a main character in the Star Wars series Rangers of the New Republic before those plans were scrapped.

The lawsuit alleges that Disney engaged in a post-termination smear campaign against Carano. Disney has not yet responded to requests for comment.
