Germany Advances Ukrainian Military Training with Leopard 2 Tanks
Germany to Train Ukrainian Troops with Leopard Tanks, Final Decision to be Taken by Chancellor Olaf Scholz
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced on Tuesday that allied countries can start training Ukrainian forces with German Leopard tanks, although the decision to provide them will be taken by Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The announcement was made after a meeting between Mr. Pistorius and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
Mr. Stoltenberg expressed the need to supply Ukraine with more advanced military systems swiftly. Poland has officially requested Germany to re-export Leopard tanks to Ukraine, a request supported by Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak.
However, the decision rests with the German Chancellor. Mr. Pistorius said that the evaluation on the availability of Leopard tanks is underway, with hopefully a decision in the next few days.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on the possible delivery of the armored vehicles, warning them of “lasting marks” in their relationship. Manufacturer Rheinmetall has stated that it is ready to deliver the initially ordered units for the armies of Slovakia and Czech Republic.
