Gauff to Face Raducanu in Second Round of Australian Open
**Coco Gauff, Emma Raducanu to Clash in Second Round of Australian Open**
Bold American star Coco Gauff and British rising talent Emma Raducanu will contest the second-round clash of the Australian Open, setting up a compelling encounter between the dynamic duo.
Gauff, 18, has had an impressive start to 2021, making the final of the French Open and also bagging the title in Auckland earlier this month. Raducanu, who is 20 and is battling a troublesome left ankle injury, has yet to reach the third round of a Grand Slam event since her win at the U.S. Open in last year.
Meanwhile, Herculean task awaits men’s defending champion Rafael Nadal, when he takes on Mackenzie McDonald. In the women’s event, top-seeded Iga Swiatek faces against Camila Osorio.
The weather might bring a little rain, with a high of 73 degrees Fahrenheit (23 Celsius).
On Tuesday, notable results included No.4 Caroline Garcia beat Katherine Sebov 6-3, 6-0; No. 5 Aryna Sabalenka beat Tereza Martincova 6-1, 6-4; No. 30 Karolina Pliskova beat Wang Ziyu 6-1, 6-3; Kimberley Birrell beat No. 31 Kaia Kanepi 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1; and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova beat No. 21 Martina Trevisan 6-3, 6-2.
In men’s results, No. 5 Andrey Rublev beat Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-4, 6-2; No. 8 Taylor Fritz beat Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5; while Andy Murray upended No. 13 Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (10-6).
The last time Murray had triumphed over a top-20 player at a Grand Slam was in 2017, when he took down No. 9 Kei Nishikori in the quarterfinals of the French Open.
Kimberley Birrell, who is set to receive a wild-card invitation for the tournament after Venus Williams pulled out, could not hide her joy; “I cried like a baby”, she said.
