A fire broke out in Evanston, Illinois, spreading to three commercial buildings in the city. Firefighters from eleven local stations were called in to help put out the flames, which took almost five hours to extinguish. The fire started at a business on Greenleaf St. around 8:30 p.m. on January 28th, and quickly spread to another location, prompting a second alarm. The first responders found smoke coming from the roof, and despite their efforts, the structure was devastated by the flames.

The businesses affected by the fire were a pottery store and an athletic store, both of which suffered significant damage. The building was declared a total loss. The fire escalated rapidly, leading to a third alarm being activated, and requiring assistance from eleven fire departments to contain the blaze and protect nearby structures. Firefighters used seven fire lines and three master streams to prevent the fire from spreading further.

The fire lasted over four hours and was finally controlled at 1:00 a.m. The damage caused the displacement of all residents inside the building, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. The Evanston Police reported multiple road closures around Greenleaf and Wesley due to the intense fire, and urged people to avoid the area. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Evanston Fire Department.

In a separate incident, the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District reported a gas leak at 12:35 p.m. in Woodstock, IL, which led to the evacuation of homes in the area. An explosion occurred at 2:38 p.m. in a two-story home, causing a fire that damaged the house and ten other nearby structures. At least 20 firefighters responded to the scene to extinguish the fire. The explosion also resulted in a power and gas outage in the surrounding residences, which was progressively restored. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but two firefighters suffered minor injuries that were treated at a nearby hospital.
