Missile Attack on Naval Shipyard in Sevastopol Sparks Large Blaze and Injures Dozens
In a recent escalation of tensions between Ukraine and Russia, a Ukrainian air attack on a naval shipyard in Sevastopol, located in Russian-occupied Crimea, has resulted in a large fire and at least 24 injured individuals, according to the Moscow-installed governor of the port city, Mikhail Razvozhayev. The attack, which took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning, involved Ukraine launching missiles, and Russian air defenses attempting to repel them.
Razvozhayev assured the public that all emergency services are currently working at the site and that there is no danger to civilian objects in the city. Sevastopol is not only the largest city in Crimea but also serves as a major port for the Russian Black Sea fleet. This attack is seen as part of Ukraine’s promise to retake Crimea from Russian control, with increased air and sea attacks on the peninsula occurring in recent weeks.
The extent of the fire and damage caused at the shipyard is currently unknown. However, images shared on social media show large flames engulfing what appears to be significant port infrastructure. Russian Telegram channels have also posted videos and additional photos showcasing sizable flames at a facility near the water. The attack on the shipyard took place at approximately 3 am local time.
In another incident on the same morning, a Russian drone attack on the Danube river port of Izmail in Ukraine’s Odesa region resulted in a fire and injuries to civilians, according to the regional governor, Oleg Kiper. Kiper described the Russian air raid as the action of “terrorists,” stating that several groups of strike drones were directed to the Izmail district. The port and other civilian infrastructure suffered damage, and firefighters are currently extinguishing the fire.
Six civilians were injured and taken to the hospital as a result of the attack. Three individuals are in serious condition, while the other three are in moderate condition. Ukraine’s Danube river ports, bordering Romania, have become crucial export routes for Ukrainian agricultural products following Russia’s withdrawal from a United Nations-brokered grain deal and the renewed blockade of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.
These recent attacks highlight the escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia, as both sides continue to vie for control in the region. The international community closely watches this conflict, hoping for a peaceful resolution to prevent further violence and casualties.
