Fierce Fighting in Eastern Ukrainian Town of Vugledar between Russian and Ukrainian Forces
Ukraine and Russian forces have engaged in a fierce battle for control of the eastern town of Vugledar this Friday, January 27 2023. Both parties claimed victory in the small administrative centre of residential towers near the strategic town of Pavlivka.
Denis Pushilin, the Moscow-appointed head of the Donetsk region, claimed victory and expressed optimism with the liberation of the city, suggesting it will be a successful victory for him in light of recent events.
Ukraine, however, remain uncertain of the outcomes, with their military spokesperson, Sergei Cherevaty, commenting that the town remains disputed with “fierce fighting”. Pre-invasion numbers showed the population at 15,000.
Moscow is now preparing for a potential offensive on February 24, the anniversary of their invasion, as per National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine’s, Oleksiy Danilov, suggestion.
The US Institute for the Study of War commented on the situation, claiming it to be part of a series of destructive attacks from Russia to challenge continued Ukrainian counter-offensive operations.
The outcome of the fight for Vugledar remains to be seen.
