The 2024 Super Bowl celebration may be missing some of its favorite packaged tacos, sauces, and dressings this weekend due to an FDA recall order. The recall is due to a risk of Listeria contamination in products sold nationwide at stores like Costco and Trader Joe’s in Illinois, California, Florida, Texas, and 12 other states.

According to the CDC, pregnant women, newborns, and older adults over 65 are at risk for contracting Listeria. The affected products include ‘Don Pancho’ brand sauces, tacos, and creams, Cotija cilantro sauce, ‘Heb’ ‘Poblano Caesar’ dressing, and cilantro dressing from ‘Trader Joe’s’. The FDA is advising anyone who has these products not to consume them and to return them to the store where they were purchased.

Listeria infection can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women are at risk of spontaneous abortions and stillbirths if infected with Listeria.

The FDA has issued warnings about products that may be contaminated with Listeria, including fresh cheeses and Mexican creams. Resh Creative Foods, a division of Reser’s Fine Foods, Inc., is voluntarily recalling products like cotija cilantro sauce to prevent the spread of Listeria.

Sauces or dressings that come in bottles, either individually or in a kit, such as Trader Joe’s cilantro sauce, are made with a cheese produced by Rizo-Lopez Food. To prevent illness, all bottles have been removed from stores in Illinois.

Some products come in a kit of two bottles, like Don Pancho cilantro dressing, and it is important to check the expiration date and remove it from your pantry. Consumers who purchased these products, such as Caesar poblano sauce, are advised to return them to the store for a refund or dispose of them.

The affected products were distributed at retail outlets including Costco, HEB, Trader Joe’s, and Albertson’s throughout Illinois and other states nationwide. The FDA also advises against consuming Express Chicken Tacos.

So far, there have been no reported cases of Listeria in Illinois due to consuming the affected products. It is important to be aware of the recall and take necessary precautions to prevent illness.
