Expert Florist Lara Thorpe Shares Tips on How to Make Your Shop-Bought Flowers Last Longer
At the recent RHS Chelsea Flower Show, expert florist Lara Thorpe shared some useful tips on how to make your shop-bought flowers last longer to former Great British Bake Off judge, Mary Berry.
According to Lara, the first thing you should do with your flowers is to take them out of the water they arrived in. Then, cut the stems at a 45 degree angle and put them in fresh cold water in a clean vase. Experts recommend cutting the stems at this angle rather than straight across as it allows for greater surface area, which guarantees an increased water uptake.
To keep your flowers hydrated and protected from bacteria build-up, make sure their stems are sitting in fresh water. Refresh the water regularly to ensure that your flowers last longer.
Lara also revealed which flowers will last the longest. According to her, carnations last the longest and can stay fresh up to three weeks in a vase. To keep them fresh for this long, you should keep them away from direct sunlight and heat.
In a similar vein, content creator Samantha Wennerstrom recently demonstrated how a small change can boost your garden’s growth. In another instance, a gardening enthusiast revealed that she swears by a little-known tree that stays beautiful all-year-round and provides great privacy from nosey neighbours.
Use these tips to keep your shop-bought flowers looking fresh for longer, and your garden blooming beautifully all year round.
